Brad Dickson is a retired Senior Lighting Director and Technical Instructor from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) with a distinguished career in lighting design and technical innovation. He pioneered the first all-LED-lit news studio and the first all-LED-lit Olympic studio for the Beijing Olympics, leading the transition of over a dozen studios across Canada to LED lighting.
With extensive experience in multi-camera productions, single-camera shoots, and film productions, Dickson has worked on a diverse range of projects, including variety shows, comedy shows, award shows, and drama series, as well as feature films such as X-Men, Death to Smoochy, and Joe Q Public.
A long-time advocate for advancing lighting technology, he has utilized pre-visualization software for lighting and camera work since the 1990s and has operated a wide array of lighting instruments, from Arc Brutes to modern LED fixtures. His expertise extends to lighting console operation, including moving light design and programming.
Dickson has shared his knowledge with industry professionals in New York and Los Angeles, delivering presentations on LED lighting and virtual production at prestigious events such as the SMPTE Media Technology Conference, Virtually Everything Summit, and StudioLab XR Workshop.
He is a member of the ASC Lighting Committee and the co-creator of the HS Scope, a tool designed to calibrate LED lights, video walls, and virtual production software based on camera chroma response. His contributions to the field have played a significant role in shaping the evolution of lighting technology in film and television production.
